Stop the world ! I want to get off ! Ben Cartwright’s speech from Bonanza 12×03, The Weary Willies.

BEN CARTWRIGHT: “Billy do you think its going to be any different in the next town, or the next ?”.

BILLY: “I don’t know but I just keep on hoping! …”.

BEN CARTWRIGHT: ” … what ? People will change ?

BILLY: “…So they’ll stop being selfish, greedy and suspicious, and violent!”.

BEN CARTWRIGHT: ” … and be what? Like you ? Is that what you want ? A world full of people like you ?”

BILLY: “Would that be so bad ?”

BEN CARTWRIGHT: “No. [pause] … The world just can’t stop. It just can’t sit under a tree in the shade and dream about the future. You have to make the future !”

BEN CARTWRIGHT: “It ain’t gonna be me Mr. Cartwright because I don’t like this world”.

BEN CARTWRIGHT: “Then change it!”.

BILLY: “You tell me. Why should I !?”.

BEN CARTWRIGHT: “Because it’s the only world you’ve got!”.

Assassins Creed Origins: Tuned settings for AMD R9 380

UPDATE: I started understanding what the graphics settings are doing by reading this guide. It also pointed out that Volumetric Clouds needs to be turned off.

So after some tuning I decided to publish my settings. At the moment this seems to give the best balance between performance and visual quality on my AMD R9 380 (4 GIG), Intel i5 4690k.

Ignore the in game benchmark as that was when I was in the desert. The most demanding city scenes (at least so far, I’m only a little way into the game) where there are many NPC’s averages around 45 FPS very rarely going below that.

Don’t be afraid to turn down the resolution.

That’s it !

A look at the upcoming Assassins Creed Origins (released on October 27th)

This is a very interesting video from Ubisoft. AC:O seems to have picked up some Far Cry series game play elements. Great ! If they worked in FC they can work here as long as they are made to fit into the AC context.

Here are some screenshots with analysis.

This is the most interesting one. The all important Skill Tree.

Starting to look like a really nice environment. But I always like sun, palm trees and deserts !

Boats ! Presumably this is primarily on the Nile, but, at least in Northern and east Egypt the sea is not that far away. The Nile reminds me of the Thames in Syndicate but I’m not seeing the kind of density of shipping that we saw there, neither would that be accurate I would guess.

Not very visible in this screen shot but that is a lion that has been tamed to attack. Even nature is on your side !

Those are Hippo’s. A whole field of them! Only Ubi could make friendly Hippo’s into ultra dangerous attack animals ! Actually I’m told they get very aggressive if mistreated. You have been warned.

I love this “arcadey” score popup look.

Steerable arrows. I wonder what the explanation for this is. Some kind of Psychokinesis ? A precursor civilisation technology ?

Fire in AC ? Don’t think I remember fire being an element of game play such as it is in the Far Cry franchise, until now. Oh wait! It was originally Ubi who bought AC elements into the Far Cry franchise. Now FC elements (or were they ! I’m so confused) are being fed into AC. Does anyone actually know where these game play mechanics originally came from in the first place anymore ? Does it really matter ? (shrugs shoulders).

Eagles disobey. Or obey YOU in this case. Not sure if this is a tamed Eagle or the standard AC Eagle that seems to have populated the entire world, yes, even 19th century London ! Talking of things that don’t make sense but just make AC more endearing. I was playing AC: Syndicate and you have to capture a pick pocket. Pretty cheeky and hypocritical seeing as your gang is already employing legions of street children … to pick people’s pockets ! But I suppose they could be rival pick pockets on your turf.

So there you go. Can AC:O match FC 5’s dogs that can steal weapons for you ? Do animals have a lobby group to monitor how they are portrayed in video games ? Does anyone actually really climb on rooftops a’la AC ? Maybe there’s another reason roof tiles occasionally get mysteriously displaced ? For answers to these questions and much more tune in next week !

Warning to Owners of Saitek Gaming Products Especially R.A.T. 5 Mouse

Hi. I had a lot of problems with sluggish controls and bad performance in Unity engine based games AKA Assassins Creed especially Syndicate and Unity. I eventually put in a support request which you can see below. Bottom line is Saitek/Mad Katz went bust and the drivers for their mice and other products are well out of date. It turned out the Profile loader which has an icon in the system tray was interfering with Unity engine mouse and keyboard controls. They were slow to react and sometimes there was no reaction. Removal of the utility running in the background solves the problem. I thought the camera in AC Unity was setup in a weird way being sluggish and generally slow to react. All along it had been this problem !

This may be a classic case of old drivers but Saitek/Mad Katz were problematic all along, probably one of the reasons they went bust along with outrageously over priced products. Removing the system mouse driver for the R.A.T. 5 mouse means that left click no longer works on the mouse ! It’s obvious that any mouse should be functional with the default Microsoft mouse driver or whatever default driver is installed. I just ordered a new mouse from a manufacturer that seems to be financially healthy and has recent driver releases.

This problem may effect other games as well and in ways that may not be immediately noticeable. For example I noticed improved frame times in Syndicate after solving the problem. That’s the accuracy of the time between each frame.

Hi. Thank you for your support. The issue has been resolved, however I wanted to say what it was. I disabled all background applications. I updated all drivers. The files verified OK, no missing or corrupted files. These steps could have solved the issue. But I only very recently did a full system update, drivers and everything so I don’t think that’s what it was. I had had trouble with the mouse on exiting almost any Unity engine based game where left click no longer worked. I’ve been using outdated drivers for a Saitek MadKatz Rat 5 mouse. The company went bust so there have been no driver updates. The profile utility running in systray for the mouse appears to have been seriously badly interacting with the Unity engine. I could not disable the mouse system driver because otherwise left click no longer works ! Once I closed the profile util running in the systray all my frame times were much more accurate, I can run at even higher settings, and no more unresponsive controls ! I did not realise this was the problem because the mouse seemed to be OK with other games, although may have been subtly messing them up as well. New mouse time. So thought I’d tell you this in case anyone else gets the same problem with old, outdated Saitek Madkatz drivers as it took me ages to get to the bottom of this. Thanks for the help !

Hello Res1s7,

Thank you for reaching Ubisoft Customer Support.

My name is Jay and I will be assisting you with your case.

Sorry that you are having this issue and thank you for sending me your system files as they really help with my investigation.

There are a few steps we can take in order to solve your issue. Could you please try the following:

1. Disable Background Applications:

To check there is no conflict with other applications and the game, please try disabling your background applications (Temporarily disable any unnecessary programs and also any anti-virus / firewall software):

If you are using Windows 8/10, start-up programs can be disabled through the task manager. Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE to go the task manager and go to the start-up tab.

If you are using a previous version of Windows, go to the Start menu on your desktop (or, if using Windows Vista/Windows 7 press the Windows key and the letter R at the same time)

– Type in MSCONFIG and press Enter
– Go to the tab, which says Start-up
– Click the option to Disable All
– Press Apply, then Close then pick the option to Restart

2. Make sure the drivers for your video card are up to date
It’s important that the components of your machine have the most up to date drivers. If they do not, then you may experience several different issues. To update your video and sound card drivers, you should visit your manufacturer’s website

3. Please verify the game files integrity
To verify the game files, we recommend running the Uplay client as administrator to do this:
– Completely exit Uplay.
– Right-click on the shortcut which you use to launch Uplay.
– Select the ‘Compatibility’ tab.
– Tick the ‘Run as Administrator’ box.
– Select ‘OK’

To verify the game files:
– Launch Uplay.
– Select the ‘Games’ tab at the top of the window.
– Click on the game tile within your games library.
– Select “Properties”.
– Under “Local Files”, choose the “Verify Files” option.

If an issue is found you will be given the option to Repair, click Repair. After repairing the issue, please verify the game again until no issues are found. When this has been completed you can then try the game again.

The issue could be related with applications working on the background as your system should be able to run the game with higher settings.
Do not hesitate in adding more information or asking any other questions you may have.

Kind Regards,
Jay

Hi. I have had a very sluggish and unresponsive controls. Sometimes the combat will be smooth but often my character fails to react to commands and get’s stuck rather than acting on the command. Assassinations from rooftops onto a target below sometimes fail to happen and I have to click the mouse multiple times to get the command to register. At first I was confused as to why this was happening as I’ve been running the game at my native resolution of 1920×1080 with Vsync (AMD Freesync) at around 50 to 60 FPS leading me to believe that the engine was performing well. I have the graphics settings on around medium to keep a high frame rate. The only other times I’ve encountered sluggish controls is in games when the frame rate is low (>= 20 FPS). So eventually I tried lowering almost everything from what I had set (Graphic settings, in sequence: Medium, high, Low, HBAO+, OFF) to Low, High, Low, SSAO, and OFF and with a resolution of 1366×768 (Vsync, AMD Freesync). After doing this much more responsive controls were noticeable. I don’t have this problem with other games and my system is a powerful one (Intel i5-4690k, R9 380, game on SSD). It can’t run Syndicate at full settings but I should be able to have the settings higher than I’m having to set them just to get responsive controls. The weird thing is that other elements of the game like the horse and carriage driving never seems to suffer from the same lack of response. I hope you can look into this issue because I’m having to put up with much reduced graphics quality just to get responsive controls. Cheers.

A note about change of political allegiances

What a load of socialist inspired nonsense I wrote in a couple of blog posts that I just deleted. They can stay on archive.org for all I care as a permanent record to the predatory madness that is the Marxist/Socialist/Communist/Fascist Left. They preyed on me for 45 years due to myself having come out of a history of abuse against me. The Left specialise in “converting” that abuse into a hatred of Capitalism and projection of the hurts onto all the assumed “bad guys” in the world. But I know it was not my fault. However it was my responsibility to get out of it. This happened in a conversion of sorts a few months before the election of Donald J Trump. I was hearing the BBC and other news outlets going on about the “crazier than usual” USA election campaigns. It was the complete lack of any political analysis that got me curious. What was really going on ? Then I discovered Bill Mitchell. The Deplorable’s. The corrupt Democrat party and corrupt Clinton’s (mirroring my own experience with  similar child abusing establishment factions here in Britain). I was late to the party. Very late, in fact I almost missed the main show. I will always be proud of seeing the entire Trump election landslide historical events first hand so to speak. It was mostly through Twitter but I engaged with Trump voters and they soon started showing me, either directly or through inspiration, how enormously I had been misled by The Left, originally by some Anarchists I used to hang around with  from around 1996 to 2003. This was not foolishness on my part. I had come out of an incredibly abusive family and had developed a sort of natural sympathy with other people’s struggles if it be individually or collectively. However as I now know this was RUTHLESSLY exploited by The Left. Some of it was already there in my own psychology. I was hurt. Really hurt. But I am not naturally a hate filled individual. It took the Left to shape that hurt into a pure hatred of the supposed global forces of Capitalism that were “really” to blame. This was basically the same process that many terrorist organisations use. Showing pictures and video’s of supposedly “illegal” wars. Telling half truths. Of course Capitalism and even the USA and other countries can be guilty of abuses. But there are almost always reasons and a context that, even if it does not justify the abuses, fits into the messy business of living and the world, rather than “explaining” it as part of some kind of global “conspiracy against the workers” Marxist nonsense.

So I threw the whole thing out on it’s ass. Flying through the Old West bar doors landing on it’s backside in a cloud of dust. The two friends who hauled the offending fellow out the bar for me were these two heavy weights …

United in Hate: The Left’s Romance with Tyranny and Terror by Jamie Glazov.

… and …

See No Evil: 19 Hard Truths the Left Can’t Handle by Joel Pollak.

There were others like Trump the Press: Don Surber’s take on how the pundits blew the 2016 Republican race by Don Surber.

So if you find any Left leaning, Marxists nonsense lurking on this blog, or anywhere else written by me, this is why. I disavow any of that, but let it stand as a warning to other abuse (especially child sexual abuse) victims out there. Beware the predatory Left !

E-Cat World Goes Off Course

I’ve been following news about the E-Cat/LENR for a while though the site E-Cat World. Up until recently it has been very good. But then something changed with the posting of an item about Mr. Dodgy UFO character Dr Greer. From there it all started going downhill. Where discussions used to be lively and informed, often with professionals turning up to give interesting news, now the site has been taken over by aggressive Liberals promoting some kind of political agenda against LENR. I suspect, if they are driven by any kind of logic, that they are afraid that LENR/Cold Fusion with give Capitalism a massive boost and their agenda of “peak oil” and catastrophic climate change will go down in flames.

I posted on that page being critical of what is going on and that comment was removed . Admittedly it was a rather strong comment but contained no profanity or anything else of an offensive nature. Here it is …

What are you doing here Liberals/Communists/Marxists ? This is a site about the industrialisation of LENR technology. It is CAPITALISM that will achieve this but you want to destroy the very thing that will give you your E-cat. You are a contradiction wrapped up in an anomaly. You want one thing with one hand but destroy that thing with the other hand. Why don’t you go away and go off to your anti-Trump rallies and leave the professionals here (any left on this site, lol?) to get on with their work. Ackland ! Are you asleep at the wheel !?

I don’t think Ackland is listening anymore (the editor of the site). He has normally been very affable. I’ve had a few email exchanges with him and made article suggestions.

I think at the bottom of his problem is likely to be the conspiracy crowd. There was already a case of a major Cold Fusion character going “out of bounds” so to speak and talking at a major meeting about 911 conspiracy theories. My point is not that conspiracy theories are always wrong (but they can get quickly get out of hand!) but that LENR/E-Cat/Cold Fusion research has already got into very hot water before due to controversies in Science about new unaccepted phenomena. That last thing it needs is to be associated with UFO’s, 911 and … what next? … Chemtrails ? (BTW Chemtrails might have some basis in reality, I really don’t know).

So I think the conspiracy theory crowd has led Frank Ackland astray. Hope you find your way my friend.

Very slow House loop with samples

This was recorded using Mixxx. I like to think of this as some kind of chillout house that you might be able to dance slowly along to but just as well wig out to lying down or relaxing 😉
